What is Cooperar Perú?

Cooperar Perú is a non-profit organization located in the small community of Tankarpata - about 20 minutes away from Cusco, Peru. Founded in 2010, they have been working with volunteers to improve the quality of life for their children, community, and local families. They focus on children and education, considering them to be the key to major community development. The local families often have insufficient access to health services, education, drinking water, water supply, and/or electricity. The children are also commonly exposed to alcoholism, domestic violence, agricultural work, and other work to help contribute to their family's income. With the rising impacts of COVID-19, including quarantine and shutdowns, the already-impoverished families are now struggling more than ever to retrieve basic needs.
Thus, their center for educational support and playful activities opened in Tankarpata in order to prevent school failure, offer learning opportunities, and support socially excluded children, as well as those at risk of dropping out of school. They provide educational resources and teach basic hygiene habits. Each day, from 3-7pm, the children are met by the volunteers and go through their daily schedule including: hand washing, brushing teeth, homework, learning activities (motor skills, math, reading), free/play time, weekly themed activities (the five senses was one week's theme), discussion time, and snack time.
Additionally, the organization works in agreement with rural communities to help strengthen them in a cooperative, voluntary way. In fact, their mission statement is: "Creating and strengthening capacities for community development." Some of their projects have been: building a greenhouse for learning purposes, family check ins and follow ups, collaboration with the local Solidarity Hospital, sending care packages to families, psychological assistance for children and families, and promoting agro-ecological practices and techniques. They also have been providing and donating to relief for COVID-19, since their community is not well prepared for an outbreak, and many local families do not receive any government aid.

Who are we?

"Cooperar Contigo" is the name of what started as a school project for our high school AP Spanish class in San Diego, California. After spending an entire year learning about "el mundo hispanohablante" (the Spanish speaking world), we were tasked to make a difference in the world. Our group of five had previously completed a smaller research presentation about a small non-profit organization in Cusco, Peru called "Cooperar Perú." This incredible foundation inspired us so much that we decided to do our final project for them, and even continue it outside of the school year.
Since then, we have created a social media account for the purpose of spreading awareness about Cooperar Perú and what they do (@cooperarcontigo on Instagram). We are actively in contact with one of the current volunteers who helps us brainstorm ideas and receive information about their projects. We even contacted the founders of Cooperar Perú and sat down for a video call interview with them! Now, we are trying to actually raise funds for their upcoming community projects so that we can make a real positive change. To help us achieve our goal, please share our project with others and encourage them to make a donation to our GoFundMe page, located at the top of this website! All donations will be sent to Cooperar Perú for education and community development projects!

The programs and projects are organized and executed by volunteers with the help of community donations. This is why it is so important to us that we help spread awareness so that we can raise funds. 100% of the donations that we receive will be going directly to Cooperar Perú for their projects. One of their most recent projects has been creating a new education space. They have taken down their past walls murals in order to create a new space. Although the children are sad to see their old murals and building go, they are collecting funds for new materials to build a new space with brand new murals. The sooner we help collect our funds for them, the sooner the children will have a better resource space to learn!

Please help us spread the world about our mission, as well as the outstanding and inspiring efforts of the community heroes at Cooperar Perú! We are extremely grateful for your support, and the families of Tankarpata thank you, too!
